Owners of small businesses are overloaded with tasks. There is always something going on, from making sure their consumers are satisfied to making sure there is enough money to keep the firm going. Certain tasks, whether they are for your client or to generate income for your company, can be highly fulfilling, but other tasks just seem to take up too much of your precious time. Overall, it seems like there is never enough time in our lives to accomplish anything else.
However, as the adage goes, even the most well-organized business professional—whether they manage a team of workers or own and run a small company—can become stressed out by all work and no recreation. Most people shake their heads and declare "no way" when considering getting involved or taking on another task.
No matter how busy they are, there is one thing that everyone should think about in order to reduce stress and feel good about themselves.
Giving back! There's nothing quite like acting from the goodness of your heart to make you feel "warm and fuzzy inside." Now, I'm not saying that you should volunteer to provide your goods or skills for free to people who can afford it, but you should think about supporting a charity that is close to your heart or one of the numerous causes in your neighborhood. If it weren't for companies and individuals who donate their time and effort, these groups could not support those in need and would only be able to exist on the goodwill of others.
For instance, I recently offered to assist a local charity with the design of their website. A local mother, worried about the dearth of secure playgrounds in the region where children with impairments might play, founded the Caledon Community Accessible Playground. Her objective was to assemble a group of community volunteers from different backgrounds who would collaborate to build this playground. After reading a story about her efforts in my local paper approximately six months ago, I knew right away that I wanted to get engaged in this.
Although I don't personally know of any disadvantaged children, I can only image how frustrating it must be for those who do when trying to find a secure and easily accessible play area for their kids.
The coordinator I spoke with over the phone sounded surprised that someone who does not know or is not closely connected to someone with a disability would wish to assist. That gave me such a great feeling. the first of many times that this endeavor will take place.
A call from another volunteer who merely wanted to thank me for getting engaged and volunteering my services came a few days later. I informed her that there were numerous ways I could support her, including with website and administrative work. It so happened that they were having trouble finding someone to assist the present Webmaster because he was overburdened with the site (as well as other facets of his life). At the proper place and time, I suppose.
The project won't end until the playground is constructed and the necessary funds is secured. We get together for a few hours once a month, or more frequently if there's an event coming up where we'd like to showcase the project. After that, we return to our separate lives and, when we have free time, work on our piece of the project.
All told, I worked on this project for roughly five hours every month. Time well spent, without a doubt. certainly not to the point where it interferes with my family life or business. It allows me time to practice and improve my talents, on top of supporting a noble cause.
Look for news items and articles about neighbors who are in need in your neighborhood's paper, and then give them a helping hand. You can succeed if I, a working mother, wife, and owner of a small business, can.
